The Workhorse Cube from Radial Engineering is a power rack designed to house three 500 Series modules. It can be used to create a channel strip by combining a preamp, EQ, and compressor (available separately), in a convenient package which can sit on the desktop or be carried around the studio.
The Cube does not have any circuitry other than its connectors, so it does not impart color, distortion or artifact to the audio signal. Compliant with the guidelines set out in the Workhorse open-source document (Whos-Doc), it accommodates the very latest 500 Series modules while being backward-compatible with older formats, including API.
Rear-panel connectivity includes XLRs and 1/4" TRS connectors on each slot for cross patching and parallel processing multiple modules. Powerful routing options abound. Feed Switches let you send the output from one module into the next without requiring a cable, while Link Switches enable you to set up links between stereo-ready modules. The unit is also equipped with Omniport for each slot, allowing the module manufacturers to implement unique functions such as key or side-chain input.
The unit's external power supply generates 500mA of shared current and 48V phantom power for microphones. The heavy-duty steel chassis provides extra shielding against electromagnetic noise and, with the handle removed, can be recessed into a desktop using the optional angle- and flush-mount hardware kits (available separately).
